Old Framed Toyokuni III Woodblock Kabuki Print

(Item #A107)

Sold

For your consideration is an old framed original Edo Era Toyokuni III Woodblock Kabuki Print. This print is an adaptation from the play Juni-hitoe Komachi zakura ("Twelve-layered Robes: Komachi Cherry Tree") first performed in 1784. The portion of Juni-hitoe still performed today is the dance sequence called "Tsumoru koi yuki seki no to" (Love and Deep Snow at the Mountain Barrier), sometimes referred to as Seki no to. In this scene, "Spirit of the Cherry Tree" (Sumizome) fights off Kuronushi with a cherry tree branch when he attempts to cut down a cherry tree that has taken on some imperial seals once hidden by Munesada. Good impression. Good overall color retention. Some toning. Publisher's seals. Toyokuni III (1786-1864). Signature in toshidama style cartouche. Entitled "Komachi-Hime". This signature style is similar to the one he used in the 1857 timeframe. It was framed by the Paul Schuster Art Gallery, 134 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, MASS, (Harvard Square), well over 50 years ago and has not been removed from the frame since. It measures approx. 14 1/2" x 19 1/2" including the 3/8" wide wooden frame. The visible portion of the print measures 9" x 13 1/4". Horizontal centerfold. No other creases or damage evidenced on visible portion.
